Nurture Your Memories and Relationships this Holiday Season

Nurture Your Memories and Relationships this Holiday Season

December 3, 2018

"To live in the hearts we live behind is not to die."  ~Thomas Campbell

My friend, Nancy, and I walked on the “greenbelt” along the river today. I asked her to show me the bench the park's department had recently erected in honor of her son who died a year ago. The bench, holding a plaque with his name and the words "Forever Loved" provides a place for Nancy and others to sit, reflect, remember and grieve.

We talked about the importance of symbols and ritual and how helpful the park bench has been to her grief journey. We also talked about the significance of making every day count with family and friends, as we never know when it will be our last.

As a reminder in the midst of this busy holiday season, remember to treat as "special gifts" those who are nearest and dearest. And, for those in your circle of influence who have recently lost a loved one, don’t forget to extend compassion though a spoken word, a timely ritual, or a written expression. These acts of grace will not go unnoticed.

Wishing you a Blessed Holiday Season,

Rebecca Hauder
